African Community Open House

*UPDATE* Sep. 22 evening. Although we have more than enough volunteers, you are still welcome to sign up by emailing byrnecreekleoclub@gmail.comto help out. Executive members, please arrive a half-hour earlier at 9:30am.

*UPDATE* As of Sep. 20 afternoon, we are still looking for about 5 volunteers.

Leo Club Members,

Our principal Mr. Rawnsley has invited us to attend the following event:

Byrne Creek’s African Community Open House
Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 10:00am-1:30pm.

This is a chance for administration, staff, and student groups to showcase what our school has to offer while listening to the unique needs and concerns of African families living in our diverse community.

We are looking for about 10-15 volunteers to help out with a range of jobs at this event. You might be greeting guests, giving directions, or helping in the forum to record information. There will be snacks provided on that day, but please bring your own lunch.

We ask that all Leo volunteers wear our club uniform: blue Leo t-shirt. If you don’t have one, you can pick one up from Ms. Fujiki (club sponsor teacher) in Room B102. The price is $10.00, to cover the costs of printing the shirt.

If you are interested, please contact us at ByrneCreekLeoClub@gmail.com ASAP. Volunteer positions are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Welcoming the International Students of 2010-2011

The beginning of each school year brings with it a group of new International Students arriving at six Burnaby secondary schools.  They come from a host of different backgrounds and every individual has unique experiences to share.  This is most easily represented by the diversity of students we have had from Brazil, China, Germany, Korea, Japan, to Vietnam, and more…

It has been a tradition for the Burnaby School Board to invite local students to partake in various orientation activities and field trips before the year starts proper. We feel that this is a great way for us (volunteers) to reach out to the new students, help make their transition to a foreign environment more enjoyable, and build friendly relationships with them early on. Thank you to Ms. Angela Tsang (coordinator at the school board’s International Education program) for offering us the opportunity to work with you over the past several years.

The following is the schedule of events for the end of August/beginning of September.

August 30, Monday – Assessment and Orientation
Shift 1: 7:00 am – 1:00 pm
Shift 2: 7:00 am  – 4:00 pm
Shift 3: 4:00 – 8:00 pm
August 31, Tuesday – Assessment
7:30 am – 1:00 pm

Sept. 2, Thursday – Field Trip – Burnaby Village Museum & Deer Lake Park
9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Sept. 3, Friday – Field Trip – Capilano Suspension Bridge & Grouse Mountain
7:15 am – 4:00 pm

Meeting location is Burnaby South Secondary.

If you have signed up to volunteer (we have students from Byrne Creek, South, and Cariboo) though us at the Byrne Creek Leo Club, I will post a list containing your name along with the shifts you will be attending in a subsequent post.

There is a training day that volunteers must attend to find out their tasks/duties and complete some paperwork including fieldtrip forms. According to Ms. Tsang, it is tentatively set for August 26th afternoon at Burnaby South Secondary. She will be sending out an email to you to confirm this. Should you have any questions or think you will not be able to make it on Aug. 26th, you should email her at Angela.Tsang@sd41.bc.ca to make other arrangements.
